Yesterday was a busy day! We visited the Inarajan Natural Pools in the morning and the Chamorro Night Market in the evening. There’s a storm rolling in over the next few days, so the weather wasn’t great for the natural pools, but it was nice and cool during the night market. The natural pools are in the village of Inalahan.

Natural Pools – Guam’s Wild Beauty
We first saw these natural pools during our drive around the island and knew we wanted to come back! They are a series of large tide pools formed by volcanic rock and coral outcroppings. The reef wall blocks heavy surf, leaving behind calm, clear pools. It was a 45 minute drive away but totally worth it. It rained part of the time we were there and was very windy. That obscured the views in the water so snorkeling wasn’t great, but we still saw a lot of tropical fish looking into the pools from above.

We enjoyed swimming around and jumping off the diving platform. This wasn’t nearly as high as the rope swing in El Salto, but still felt higher than what I like to jump from. Alexis loved it!

It was also fun floating in the current created by the huge waves on the other side of the reef. We hope to come back here on a nicer day before we leave Guam.

Chamorro Night Market – A Taste of Guam
The Chamorro Night Market is the night market we were most excited to experience. It’s known as Guam’s most famous weekly cultural gathering and is held every Wednesday night. We were a little underwhelmed by the evening, and there was not as much energy as the Tumon Night Market. I’m not sure if we built it up too much in our heads, or if vendors backed out because of the weather. We plan to visit this market again before we leave.

We ate Chamorro food and had a friendly stray dog that joined us. He begged for food in a very polite way and mostly left us alone. Chamorro food is surprisingly mild. Their traditional dishes are a variety of BBQ meat (ribs, chicken or pork kabobs, sausage), red rice, macaroni salad, and corn. The red rice looks delicious, but has almost no taste. The portions are huge and we usually have enough leftover for lunch the next day.

Alexis found a gift for a friend and I bought a pair of earrings. I’m buying a pair in each country we visit and have been on the lookout for the perfect pair. There was a very friendly local artist weaving coconut palm leaves. He made Alexis and I these adorable little flowers. They are now a centerpiece on our kitchen table!

Brave Alexis! That looks a little high to jump from for me too.
Sometimes I walk by your house here in Stonegate, and cannot believe that after years of talking about it, you are actually LIVING your gap year. I’m just so proud of you guys. Does it ever feel surreal to you? Big hugs!!
Alexis is so brave! I never realized how much of an adrenaline junky she is.
It feels surreal a lot of the time! Thanks for always listening to me talk about it for years on our walks. Missing you!!
