Today we visited a very foggy viewpoint and our first South African beach. The Knysna lagoon opens into the Indian Ocean at a passage flanked by two towering sandstone cliffs called The Heads. The East Head View Point is said to be one of the most iconic views on the Garden Route. I’m sure it is, when it’s not covered in fog.
Stunning Views of…Fog
As we were driving towards The Heads, we could see the fog rolling through the passage and I wondered what we would find once we got to the top.

As we walked towards the viewpoint we were met with a wall of fog. You could see a bit of the ocean if you looked directly down the side of the cliff, but beyond that we couldn’t see a thing.

A local woman said she had never seen it this foggy in the 50+ years she’s been alive. This wasn’t a huge disappointment for us. This lookout is only about 15 minutes from our condo, so we can go back. We ran into a couple that said they had driven 2.5 hours to see the view. Rightfully, they were pretty disappointed.
Golden Rocks and Indian Ocean Views: Coney Glen Beach
At the base of The Heads sits a rocky cove that is Coney Glen Beach. This is not a typical long sandy beach, but a hidden gem nestled between sandstone cliffs.

It has huge golden rocks that we’re fun to climb on and watch the waves crash below you.

These rocks have their very own little ecosystem, with vegetation growing on them, and tiny tide pools full of small ocean creatures.

There were a few other people there when we arrived, but we eventually had the entire beach to ourselves. This is a place I know we will frequent often during our time in Knysna. I bet it’s even more stunning when it’s not blanketed with fog.
Somewhere In The Mist
I couldn’t help but think of my sister as we were there. Not only does she love the fog, but she has huge ties to Africa. She served in the peace corp in northwest Africa in her 20’s, and lived there for many years afterwards. She met her husband while there and my parents and I flew to Africa for their wedding in 2003. I remember thinking back then that she was so brave and adventurous and that I could never be like that. I guess my desire to see the world was just a little over 20 years behind hers. I’m so glad I eventually got there!

Oooh I love fog too! So cool how you can see it coming down out now the mountains like that. Glad you’ll get to revisit this spot in different conditions, too.
And you are totally living your adventurous era! 👏🏻👏🏻 maybe mine will be in another 20 years, lol.
The fog looks so cool coming down! But yes, 2.5 hr drive and not getting the view would be disappointing. I’m glad you decided to go to South Africa, and you’re getting amazing experiences!
