To say it has rained a lot the past couple days is an understatement. This was to be expected as it is rainy season here, but it still takes getting used to. We’ve stayed cozy in our house and also ventured out when the rain stopped. And sometimes even during the rain just because it’s fun!

Cheers, Clouds and Subpar Spanish
Dave and I had happy hour on our small deck last night and toasted a great start to the year! The clouds parted enough for us to get our first full glimpse of the Arenal volcano. It truly is amazing! We went out to eat at a little food stand down the street, and all successfully ordered in Spanish. Everyone laughed at me when I had to count on my fingers to remember what the number seven was in Spanish. I am definitely the farthest behind on our Duolingo.

Exercise, Supplies and Stray Dogs
Figuring out how to incorporate exercise into our lives this year will be challenging at times. At home, we had an amazing set up in our basement. There is a small park very close to our Airbnb and it has these outdoor workout machines. We are also just getting creative by doing bodyweight workouts inside and there will always be a lot of walking.

Today, we walked into La Fortuna, which is about 25 minutes away from our Airbnb. We saw several places where we want to book excursions, but we are pacing ourselves. There is a bigger supermarket there and we were able to find a volleyball and some colored pencils. There are stray dogs everywhere here and the kids are very entertained by them. They are giving each of them names from Alexis’ current favorite movie, The Outsiders. This sweet dog followed us all the way out of La Fortuna.

After dinner, Dave and I went for a walk while the kids did the dishes. This is a similar routine we have at home and it was just what I needed. As we were walking Dave commented that he has to remind himself we are in Costa Rica. I mentioned how I wish we could engage the locals more but the language barrier is hard. Definitely different conversations than we have walking in Colorado. It was a good way to end the day!
