I can’t believe we have been in Guam for almost a week. So far my impressions of this island paradise are extremely positive! I had mentioned before that we were growing tired of the crowds of people everywhere in Japan, and Guam is just the reprieve we needed. Nothing feels crowded here. The beach is quiet and calm, and we can walk side by side on the sidewalk. The local people are unbelievably friendly, in an outgoing way that I love. We are greeted with a cheerful ‘Hafa Adai!’ and a smile as we walk into any store, and often from strangers we pass on the street.

Unhurried Days: Embracing the Gift of Slow Living
Our days have felt slow paced in the best possible way. I’m not sure if it’s the magic of our cozy accommodation or if I’ve finally learned to embrace the Pura Vida life I was chasing in Costa Rica. Regardless of the cause, it feels wonderful! We’ve gone to the beach every day to snorkel and each time the kids see something new in the water. Braxton and I usually build a sand castle and I take way too many pictures.

Simple Instructions and Stunning Sunsets
I know that part of what is adding to my calm is how easy everything is to navigate here. I didn’t need AI or Google translate to operate the washing machine or any other appliances! There’s no currency conversion and everyone we have encountered so far speaks English. I didn’t realize just how much mental energy that all required until it was eliminated.
The view of the sunset from our balcony is also adding to the soothing effect of Guam. Growing up on a farm, I could see for miles in any direction. We bought our house in Colorado mostly for the unobstructed view out the back windows. Something about a wide-open view puts me at ease.

We have yet to venture far beyond our Tumon Bay neighborhood. The island is fairly small, at only 9 miles wide and 30 miles long – but there is plenty of exploring to do. We’ll get there; we’re just doing it on island time!
