Last night we visited Chiang Mai’s famous Sunday Night Market. This is considered the best night market in Chiang Mai and we were all excited to check it out. We LOVED night markets on Guam and went every chance we got. This market starts at Tha Phae Gate and runs about 1 kilometer through the historic center of the Old City. One of the first things I noticed was how crowded it was. Nothing felt crowded on Guam and the night markets were no exception. Despite the big crowds, we all had fun and ate some delicious food!
Tha Phae Gate and Beyond
At the Tha Phae Gate entrance, where the market begins, there was a 3 on 3 basketball tournament going on. Dave and I both have fond memories of playing in 3 on 3 tournaments growing up, and this was fun to watch for a bit. Alexis and I also enjoyed watching all the tourists taking pictures in front of the Tha Phae Gate. Taking the “perfect picture” is a big thing in Asian countries. This is usually amplified in high tourist places and this was definitely that.

We slowly made our way down what they call the “walking street”. We ducked into some little shops along the way so Braxton could get something for Alexis for her upcoming birthday and I found the perfect Thailand earrings.

Street Food Heaven: Our Sunday Night Market Finds
We stopped to eat at one of the various food stand areas. This particular one was set up within a temple complex and had nice low sitting tables to eat at. The boys got burgers, Alexis got a delicious cheesy potato that was cooked with a blow torch, and I got the most amazing spring rolls! I have been craving them a lot here and they did not disappoint!

Alexis and I also shared some quail eggs and for dessert we tried a traditional Thai dessert of sweet potato balls. They were good, but Alexis was very disappointed we didn’t get the crepe. Maybe next time!

Walking Through the Old City
After we finished eating we walked through the rest of the night market as the sun was setting. We stopped at several different temples as we passed them. I always love seeing how different they all are!

During a bathroom stop we came across our very first squat toilet. I knew this was a matter of when not if we would experience these. Everything was so dirty, Alexis and I chose to pass and waited until we got home. I guess our tolerance isn’t high for everything – Ha!

Good Food, Good Finds, Good Night
We all really enjoyed the night, but agreed that we prefer the night markets on Guam. I thought the food was better here in Thailand, but it was way too crowded. Braxton found the perfect gift for Alexis and we are all looking forward to celebrating her birthday this week. We are currently watching the Super Bowl. It felt very strange to start it at 6:30am on a Monday morning. We are missing the traditional Super Bowl snacks. Eating breakfast while we watched just didn’t feel the same.

Fire potato! Did it start raw and cook in a short time with the blow torch? So interesting! And a 6:30am Super Bowl 😂 it was a boring one too, hopefully you all had coffee, lol.
No, it was already cooked. The blow torch just melted the cheese and gave it a smoky flavor. So yummy! Yes, very boring Super Bowl and we absolutely had coffee!
