Today we visited Two Lovers Point, also known by its Chamorro name as Puntan Dos Amantes. It is a dramatic limestone cliff that is about 370 feet high and overlooks Tumon Bay. We can see the cliff from the balcony of our condo and have been looking forward to checking it out. This is one of Guam’s most iconic landmarks, and a place Debby and Steve visited often during their time on the island. Debby said that they would pack lunch, drive to the top, and enjoy the expansive views while sitting on the rocks.

Two Lovers Point is tied to a Chamorro folktale that dates back to the Spanish colonial era. Below is a picture of a plaque with the full story. The short version is that a wealthy Spanish settler’s daughter fell in love with a poor Chamorro man. Her father arranged for her to marry a Spanish captain instead. Refusing to be separated, the two lovers fled to the cliff. With soldiers in pursuit, they tied their hair together and leapt into the sea, choosing to be united in death rather than live apart.

Debby was shocked at how developed the area is now. She said when she and Steve visited, it was simply a cliff with a view. It has become a true tourist attraction, along with an entrance fee and gift shop. There’s an expansive two level deck, with stunning views and is a popular place for weddings and watching the sunset. We were pleasantly surprised that like everywhere we’ve gone in Guam it was not busy at all. The view was spectacular!

A Hidden Memorial
As we were leaving we stumbled upon this 9/11 Memorial. I always love reading about how a memorial was designed and the significance behind it. The two towers represent the World Trade Center upheld by Guam’s iconic latte stone. The stone signifies the strength of the island people in memorializing those who lost their lives.

Dave and I took a long walk on the beach when we got back, while Debby and the kids played Monopoly. We are all soaking up this special time together. Alexis has said to me numerous times with a huge smile on her face ‘I love having someone new here!’

Extorvert Alexis! I love it, and I relate…it’s always so nice to have an extra person. Especailly a grandma! What a cool landmark, too. I would feel so disappointed if I had seen it as a natural cliff, like Debby, and now a tourist attraction, but I suppose it’s good for the economy and cool that so many others are getting to experience it too. Big hugs! Missing you!
