We are working our way through our list of things we want to do and see on Guam while Debby is here. Last night we walked to the beach to watch the sunset. Our beach faces mostly north, so I wasn’t sure how good the sunset would be. I didn’t need to worry – it was gorgeous! The mix of ocean water, pink and orange sky, and illuminated high-rises made for a striking view.

A Drive Around the Island – Guam in a Day
Another item on our list was to drive around the entire island. Debby said that she and Steve drove around the island a few times in their old car that she affectionately referred to as their ‘Guam Bomb’. It takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to drive around the island without stopping. The standard speed limit unless otherwise posted on Guam is 35mph. We spent the entire morning making the loop with lots of stops along the way to take in the beautiful scenery!

They have these white signs at all the various beaches around the island. I don’t think we will get a picture of them all, but we ticked a few off the list today!

Towards the end of our loop around the island we drove past Anderson Air Force Base where Debby was stationed while on Guam. She told us memories of setting up tent cities for Vietnamese refugees that fled to Guam during the Vietnam War. We drove past the back entrance, where Debby’s job during that time was to guard the gate. She worked the night shift, while Steve worked during the day welcoming refugees and collecting their information.

Tumon Night Market
To end the day we went to the Tumon Night Market. This is an event that happens every Sunday night. They block off a portion of the street and there are a variety of food trucks and vendors. We enjoyed walking around, looking at the shops, and eating some yummy food. I tried pickled mango which was on my list of things to try while we were here. It was spicier than I thought it would be and not sweet at all. Overall, not my favorite. Alexis and I split a delicious grilled cheese, while the boys enjoyed a traditional Chamorro dish of pork and chicken kabobs with red rice.

As we were leaving both of the kids got dessert. Braxton was excited about his tiny cone on top of an ice cream cone!

It’s interesting to think that we could drive around this entire island in less time than it takes to watch the average movie. As we drove through the various villages I found myself wondering what it would feel like to grow up on this island. A young high school kid approached us while at Donki the other night simply to ask us questions about America. He wanted to know if Guam was similar to the mainland US and said his dream is to go there some day. He then commented on how he loves our light colored eyes. Encountering locals in a new country is my absolute favorite!

Sounds so interesting!!! Having family with you that has history there is no doubt a bonus!!! I’m so glad she joined you!!!! I’m sure she is really taking it all in 😎.
It looks so beautiful there!!!! Soak it up and keep up the excellent work on the blog. 🥰🥰🥰👍🏻
Ohh I love reading about your interactions with the locals! It’s my favorite. Also, that ice cream cone 🍦👏🏻👏🏻
Love all of this! As someone who works night shifts and knows how hard it is on the body, I can’t imagine doing that and being responsible for guarding the gate.😳
I love the sunsets, cone in a cone, night markets and all the things! So very cool!
