Guam is our third destination and the last stop that my brain has mentally prepared for. I think it’s more like Costa Rica than Japan in the climate and looks, but we see many Korean and Japanese people here. These are some things that make Guam special:

The New Fashion – I ❤️ Guam Shirts
The new style that A LOT of tourists wear: A white I ❤️ Guam shirt!! They are everywhere. You will not walk down a street without seeing at least five tourists wearing those shirts. This may not seem weird to tourists from other countries, but in Colorado you rarely see people with the exact same touristy shirt.

Ambulances Are Never Going to Arrive on Time
Everyone has the common knowledge that if an ambulance, firetruck, or police car is speeding down the road with the sirens on, you move out of the way. This allows the trucks a clear path to whatever emergency is happening. Apparently, people in Guam have never heard of that rule. I was on a walk one day and I saw an ambulance, with its sirens on, trying to get down a street. No cars would move though!! That ambulance was stuck behind traffic, trying to get through. So if you’re planning on traveling to Guam, don’t have a medical emergency.
Friendly Workers – That Speak English
Most places we go, the employees working there are unbelievably helpful and always greet us with a warm “Hafa Adai!” Even better, they speak English, so I know what they are saying and how to talk to them. Much better than in Japan!

Matching Outfits – Are You Kidding Me?
In Colorado, you almost never see two people matching, especially not couples. They may wear colors that complement each other, but never wear identical matching outfits. Here on Guam, you can immediately tell which tourists are dating or married because the guy wears a Hawaiian shirt, and the girl wears an identical Hawaiian dress! I told my parents that if they ever buy matching outfits like that, I’m going to burn them.
Night Markets – My Absolute Favorite
I have been to many, many night markets, and they have yet to get boring! There is the Tumon Night Market every Sunday, the Chamorro Village Night Market that’s every Wednesday and the Mangliao Night Market that is every Thursday. I love seeing all of the different things people are selling and eating all the amazing food!

Overall, I think Guam is the place that I feel the most comfortable in so far. People speak English, our house is cozy, food is familiar, it’s pretty great! Like I said, when I thought of gap year, my brain only planned about three destinations in advance, so I have no idea what the Philippines will be like at all. I would love to come back to Guam for a vacation sometime!

Wonderful post Alexis! I love hearing your perspective. I laughed out loud about what you’d do if your parents wore matching tourist outfits.
Iook forward to hearing what you think about the Philippines!!
