Something I love about Tokyo is that we can wake up and ask ourselves ‘What should we do today?’ – and there are what feels like endless options. We thought about going to the sumo museum to make up for yesterday. However, we discovered today that it’s closed the entire month of September for a tournament. After our run this morning, Dave and I got a surprise dose of sumo – spotting wrestlers in their loincloths right on the street. No museum needed. I wanted to snap a picture but felt like it was inappropriate. Even being within proximity to take a picture felt a little inappropriate. For a culture that is modest some of their attire is very revealing!
Skytree Up Close
We decided to walk and get an up close view of the Skytree and explore the area around there. The Skytree has two separate observation decks, but this is not something any of us were interested in doing. It was fun to take in its massive size as we got closer and closer. Braxton and I figured out that if the Skytree fell over, it would reach roughly the distance from our house in Colorado to his elementary school.

There was a small splash pad at the base of the Skytree, which both of the kids said reminded them of the splash pad outside our local library back home. We really miss that library!

Fumbling Around the Subway
Rather than walk back home, we decided to try out the subway system. The JR train system we are familiar with doesn’t go to this area. It did not feel as intuitive as the JR system. Maybe we were just tired, but we struggled even finding the right station. We almost entered at the wrong automatic ticket gate, but Dave realized signs on the gate that said ‘NOT the Subway’. I’m guessing we are not the first to make this mistake. Some locals saw us looking around lost/stunned and nicely pointed us in the right direction.

After quickly jumping off what we discovered was the wrong subway train and hesitating too long to board the next one – we successfully got on the following train and found our way home. Third times a charm! I’m sure it will go much smoother next time.

I almost feel like I’m there with you and yet know how more intense it is for you than I could possibly imagine! Less knowledge and awesome experience for me, but I’m grateful for every morsel I can take in. Keep up the great blogging👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎.
Ooo the subway would have made me so anxious. I think in any city it would make me anxious! I would always be worried about grabbing the wrong train. Good job not giving up and figuring it out. What a valuable lesson for your kids.
