Dave and I run every Saturday almost like clockwork. Like any Saturday we gave it a try today. Our plan was to run to a gym in La Fortuna, and if the run there didn’t work out, we could run at the gym. This is one of those times in life that plan A and plan B both failed. On our way there, we ran for only a few minutes before local dogs started chasing us. We see these dogs all the time and they are usually friendly enough, but as soon as we were running the dogs got aggressive. In addition, side walks are sparse around here and often end abruptly. It was more like cross country running and possibly a little dangerous.
Running From Dogs to Running Into Tech Trouble
At the gym we got stuck at the out of place fancy automated gate that lets people in. Not fully understanding the wording, we thought it was giving a QR code to register, but it didn’t work. The guy at the front desk let us in, probably after laughing for a couple minutes. We paid for a day pass and went in. On the first floor there were machines and a few people working out. That level’s max occupancy is probably only a half dozen people. With no treadmills in site we went to the next floor and found these bizarre treadmill-adjacent things.

They have no power, and just stepping forward onto the sloped portion causes the belt to move forward. We briefly tried them but quit when we realized we would have gone from zero to a dead sprint in ten seconds. I’m sure with practice they are effective, but I wasn’t interested in making a fool of myself. I was able to successfully walk on them, but I’ll stick to old fashioned electric treadmills for running. The rest of the gym was great and the open air aspect was nice. Dave and I both got a good workout in, even if we didn’t get to run.
Savoring Simplicity – A Meal That Felt Just Right!

Dave and I went out for dinner just the two of us and tried a local Soda. A Soda refers to a small, family-run and typically open-air restaurant that specializes in traditional Costa Rican cuisine. I got the Patacones and they were delicious! If you know me well, you are aware that eating out is often difficult for me. I have a sensitive stomach and often leave not feeling great. This was not my typical experience. The food was delicious, the portion size was perfect, the price was right and I left feeling great!

A restaurant success!! I’m so curious what the difference might be between this restaurant and American restaurants? Less processed? Different oils? Either way, so glad you enjoyed a good meal. And is be totally intimidated by that treadmill thing too!
I’m not sure what the difference was, but I hope this is my experience for the entire year!
I laughed outloud thinking about you running from the dogs and then standing at the weird fence! Glad you’re ok though! I’m so glad you got to taste local cuisine and still feel good afterwards. These updates are so fun and I’m loving it all!
Thanks Natalie! Missing you so much!!
