Before we checked out of our Airbnb this morning, we took one final walk along the Sumida river. As Dave and I were sitting enjoying the view, Braxton worked on building a boat out of sticks and leaves. A local woman stopped and started talking to Braxton in Japanese. Through gestures he explained he was building a boat and planned to see if it would sail along the river. When the woman started asking more questions we got out Google translate so they could understand each other.

She asked Braxton how old he was, and then asked if she could take a picture of him with his boat. She said she had never seen anyone make something like that before. The woman waited and watched Braxton drop his boat into the river. To all of our surprise, it landed upright and started to float down the river. She smiled big at Braxton, patted him on the head, and then gave him a handful of candy.

This was such a sweet interaction and memorable way to end our time here in Tokyo. I feel like we could stay another entire month and still not discover everything this city has to offer. I sure hope we can come back here someday. Goodbye for now, Tokyo. You’ve been incredible!

I read this story a few days ago through my email, but haven’t had a chance to pop over and comment yet…but this sweet interaction has been replaying in my head since I first saw it!! It’s such a wonderful exchange of humanity, even with the language barrier. It warms my heart!!
