Last night we did a blind KitKat tasting competition. It was so much fun! KitKats are a big thing here in Japan and are seen as a good luck charm. KitKat sounds like Kitto Katsu – a phrase in Japan that means ‘surely you will win’. They are often given with a good luck message to students before exams and taken home by tourists as souvenirs.
We made the long walk to the closest Don Quijote and loaded up on a bunch of KitKats. We chose 12 different flavors that included – Peach, Milo, Strawberry Shortcake, Milk Tea, Chocolate Orange, Sakura and Roasted Soybean Powder, Apple Pie, Chestnut, Doubly Berry Nut, Matcha, Strawberry, and Black Biscuit.

I laid out each flavor on a numbered tissue. I then wrote the names of each flavor on a small piece of paper and hid it under each tissue. We sampled the flavors one at a time and had to write down what flavor we thought it was. Some of them were extremely easy to distinguish – like chocolate orange and apple pie. Others were very mild and hard to pinpoint – like chestnut.

Alexis won the competition, correctly guessing 9 out of the 12 flavors! We have an abundance of KitKats to eat for movie snacks tonight. The Skytree was shining a new color as we walked home, which was fun to see!

Rainy Day in Tokyo
It has been raining nonstop since the middle of the night, and is supposed to continue the rest of the day. This put a damper on our field trip Friday plans to tour the sumo museum. Maybe next Friday – we still have time. The kids declared a pajama day before we started school.

After school we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of reading, with a little bit of feeling stir crazy. If you haven’t realized this yet, Braxton and I are the ones that struggle to sit still. I’m still chasing Pura Vida, even while living in Japan.

Yum!!
I really love that you designated a pajama day…I mean technically they could all be PJ days, right? Your commitment to routine and structure always amazes me!!
The Kit Kat thing is so fun! I have tried some weird flavors from Japan, but had no idea they were a good luck symbol and didn’t know that phrase, I love learning stuff like that!
