The clouds finally parted last night and the volcano was in full view. As is often the case, these pictures do not do it justice. It’s massive and beautiful and literally in our backyard. There was a glimpse of blue skies and the sun came out long enough to give us an amazing rainbow.

All the neighborhood kids came out to play. They were playing a version of what we know as red light/green light. This break from the rain was such a reprieve and very much needed!
Coffee, Chocolate and a Case of the Jitters
We went on a chocolate and coffee tour this morning and we all gave it 5 stars! The kids were not excited to get out of bed early, but in the end they felt like it was worth it. The rain held out for the entire day! It was extremely interesting to see how both coffee and chocolate are grown and harvested. The kids enjoyed trying coffee even though Braxton had a bad case of the jitters afterwards. We also learned how they process sugar cane and the kids got to experience it first hand. This was our first excursion here and it definitely felt like it was worth the money.

Blue Skies and Engaging The Locals
We spent the afternoon enjoying the outdoors. We walked to the park to play volleyball for awhile. Braxton commented that the blue skies reminded him of Colorado. Alexis responded, ‘Yeah, except there’s a volcano over there and we’re surrounded by palm trees’. Gotta love that teenage sarcasm. Ha! When we got back from the park there were neighborhood kids outside. Braxton was brave enough to go talk to one of the boys and they played together for a long time. I have been waiting for this to happen and it made me so happy! We plan to enjoy our traditional Friday night movie tonight. It’s been a good first week!

How cool that there are neighborhood kids to interact with for the next 3 months. Do Alexis and Braxton speak Spanish? Love the pics of a rainbow and volcano. What a great experience!
Hi Carol! I’m so glad you’re following along. Alexis and Braxton speak very little Spanish. Alexis took Spanish this past year in school and is the best out of all of us. We have all been doing Duolingo for a few months, but the progress feels slow. It’s amazing how much you can interact with just gestures and a few words though.
This is so cool, I am loving every single update! So proud of Braxton, too! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks, Katie! I was really proud of him too!!
Wow!! Your adventure is already off to such an amazing start. Way to go on figuring t out.
Ps! Your hair looks fabulous – seriously! 🥰
Thanks, Rene! My big hair is here to stay as long as we are in humid climates. I didn’t even pack a blow dryer! Thanks for all your love and support!
This sounds like an incredible first week of your Gap Year! How can you go wrong with coffee and chocolate?! I’m so glad the kids have found local playmates. I love all your updates and really enjoy being able to follow along!!
Thanks, Lindsey! I’m sure it’s bringing back memories from your trip to Costa Rica. Your family has been on my mind! I can’t remember when you and your girls arrive in Colorado, but I hope it’s an easy adjustment for everyone!
I love all of this!!!
